(3:20 - 4:30) Panel: The Value of Verification
Should the role of verification engineer be a career goal? When a project
team ramps up, who's hired first, designers or verification engineers? The
panel will take a hard look at the true value of verification and offer
some candid answers. Larry Saunders and Yatin Trivedi of Intrinsix will
lead a heady debate over the value of verification with a group of seasoned
design management experts.
Panelists:
Janick Bergeron - Qualis Design Canada
Steve Golson - Trilobyte Systems
Foster White - Intel Corp.
Darius Dabiri - Agile Storage
Panel Moderators: Yatin Trivedi, Larry Saunders - Intrinsix

(4:30 - 6:00) CEO Panel: "Where Does EDA Innovation Really Come From?"
Everyone knows that most (if not all) of the innovation in the EDA
industry comes from the start-ups. Each year 70 to 80 new EDA
start-ups pop up at DAC like weeds. Yet most of them will be out
of business within 3 years.
How can one recognize the small handful of new start-ups that will
succeed? How does an EDA start-up find early customers? The funding
to start? What if one of the Big Three (Cadence, Synopsys, Mentor)
tries to develop something similar to what the start-up is developing?
What impact do the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Disinformation) media
wars have on a start-up? What about industry lawsuits? What happens
to an EDA start-up during an economic downturn?
In short, where does EDA innovation really come from?
Panelists:
Rageev Madhavan, CEO of Magma, former founder & CEO of Ambit
Buno Pati, CEO of Numerical Technologies, former professor at
Harvard and Stanford
Mike Tsai, CEO of Axis, former founder & CEO of ArcSys, and
former founder & CEO of ECAD Systems
Simon Davidmann, CEO of Co-Design, former founder & head of
Europe for Ambit, Chronologics, and Gateway
Dan Skilken, CEO of the now defunct C-Level Design, former
founder & VP of Marketing of Summit Design
Andy Bechtolsheim, VP/GM of Cisco Systems, and financial backer
of many EDA start-ups
Prabhu Goel, CEO of Tharas, former founder & CEO of Gateway,
and financial backer of many EDA start-ups
Gary Smith, Senior EDA Analyst at Dataquest
Panel Moderator: John Cooley, ESNUG moderator & EE Times columnist

(6:00 - 7:00) Reception: Play Who Wants To Be An EDA Millionare?
Mentor Graphics is giving out free booze and munchies in the HDL Exhibit
Hall (the place with all the vendors booths) while engineers play the EDA
version of "Who Wants To Be A Millionare?". The winner wins a cash prize
of something like $500 or $1000. (I'm not sure which.) Only the engineers
with the most "gates" from the exhibitors will be allowed to compete (as
in you'll have to visit a few EDA vendor booths and they'll give you these
"gates" after you hear their pitch. What? Did you think this would be
complete free????)
This will also be a great time to schmooze, one-on-one, with the panelists
from the earlier two events plus many other notables in the EDA community.
Again, all three events are at the San Jose DoubleTree Inn this afternoon.
